What is Freegal Music?
Freegal is a service to which libraries subscribe, and which they then provide to their patrons. Library card holders are entitled to download five DRM-free MP3 tracks per week. Some libraries also include streaming as part of their service. Accessing the service involves finding a library system that subscribes to the service, and then obtaining a library card for that library. The library card number and PIN are often used as the sign in and password for the service. Some larger metropolitan areas have multiple library systems that subscribe to Freegal.

The catalog is comprised of two large distribution networks: 1) Sony, including RED artist development and 2) The Orchard. Most labels distributed by these networks are included, but there are often exceptions. Sometimes individual artists, albums, or tracks do not appear. The labels included sometimes change if they sign new distribution deals. Some labels that were available at the beginning of the service are no longer available.
